1878-CC<$20> AU53 PCGS. This is an important issue in the series of Carson City Mint double eagles. The mintage was just 13,180 coins, and numismatic researcher and author Rusty Goe has estimated that about 3% of the mintage still survives today. Goe is a dealer and collector in Reno, Nevada, and one of the nation's top authorities on the subject of Carson City coinage. His book, The Mint on Carson Street is one of the classic entries in the field of recently published numismatic literature. Despite the high survival rate, only about 400 examples are known, most in XF and AU grades. Like most of the double eagles in The Wyoming Collection, this example has excellent eye appeal. It is essentially a full strike with excellent design definition throughout. The surfaces are fully lustrous with only a trace of wear evident on the high points. Both sides have brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with a hint of rose and green. The most important aspect of this specimen is the spectacular eye appeal created by fully prooflike surfaces. Housed in an older green label PCGS holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
