<B>1878-CC $10 AU55 NGC.</B></I> Variety 1-A, the only known variety. The 1878-CC eagle is among the rarest Carson City tens in terms of its overall rarity. Only one Carson City gold coin--the 1879-CC eagle--has a lower original mintage than the 1878-CC. Douglas Winter, in his <I>Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint,</B></I> says: "The 1878-CC eagle is a rare coin in all grades. It is usually seen in Very Fine grades. Average quality Extremely Fine pieces are actually a bit more available than one might believe. This is a truly rare issue in any About Uncirculated grade."<BR> The Choice AU coin in this lot is quite exceptional. Its yellow-gold surfaces display considerable luster (that is usually poor for this issue), and are quite clean (they tend to be heavily abraded). Most of the design elements are well defined, save for minor softness on the star centers and in portions of Liberty's hair.
