<B>1878 8TF S$1 PR66 PCGS.</B></I> VAM-14.3. The eight tail feather coins were the first Morgan dollars struck after a series of pattern pieces. The design was changed after complaints from bird lovers, who were quick to point out the error in the design. Eagles have a long central tail feather, with equal numbers of additional feathers on each side. Thus the total number of feathers had to be an odd number, and the design was modified to seven tail feathers. Just 500 proofs had been coined before the change, and another 250 proofs were struck with seven tail feathers. This example is a lovely Premium Gem proof with intermingled lilac and steel toning over fully mirrored fields and lustrous devices.
