<B>1878 8TF S$1 PR65 Cameo NGC.</B></I> VAM-14.3. The diagnostics for this variety include recutting on the date, and on most of the obverse stars. The reverse shows doubling on the tops of UNITED SATES OF and ONE DOLLAR. According to Bowers (1993): "On March 12, 15 and 18, 100 Proofs were delivered on each day; these were probably the 8 TF type. Most were VAM-14-3." Survivors are scarce, with perhaps 250 pieces remaining.<BR> This lovely Gem is brilliant and crisply struck over all of the design elements. Neither side reveals any contact marks, save for a tiny rim bump below 9 o'clock on the obverse. The cameo contrast is mild but pleasing on both obverse and reverse.
