Deeply toned in colorful steel-gray and golden hues, with flashes of blue and rose iridescence as the coin turns under a light source. Underlying the uniform coloration are glassy proof mirrors of substantial quality and eye appeal. The 1878 8TF is the introductory issue of the Morgan dollar series, and proofs are even more challenging than their modest mintage of just 500 coins would suggest. Miller wrote that, of the 30 or so pieces he had seen over a 15-year period, most 8TF proofs were "toned, some very deeply, and some with an attractive play of varying colors. ..." This high grade piece certainly fits that description. A Choice coin for the specialist in this ever-popular series. Population: 27 in 64, 18 finer (4/06).
