1878 8TF S$1 MS66 PCGS. A well struck Gem with semi-prooflike fields and lightly toned surfaces. The fields are exceptionally undisturbed. Both the obverse and reverse are die doubled, most notably on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the wreath leaves. The obverse border has multiple wispy die cracks, as made. The reverse has several lengthy curved and raised die scratches (as struck) in the fields. A few raised spike-like lines (as made) are noted from the rim below the R in DOLLAR. These mint-made irregularities attest to the travails of the Philadelphia Mint as it struggled to produce Silver Dollars in sufficient quantity to satisfy the Bland-Allison Act. As of October, 2002, PCGS and NGC combined have certified only 26 pieces in this grade, with just two coins finer, both in the MS67 grade. From the Memphis Collection.
