1878 8TF$1>--Damaged--ANACS. PR55 Details. VAM-14.8. Incorrectly labeled as "AU55 Details" by ANACS. An intricately struck, brilliant, and perhaps dipped specimen of which probably only 200 pieces were struck. The obverse field has been professionally engraved with the cursive inscription John & Susan Jolley,/May 1 1878 "Bland"-ly/greeted/by William W. & Ida Long. A second and slightly less skilled inscription was added in a different type font and capital letters, SILVER WEDDING. It is thought that a friend or loved one ordered this coin directly from the mint specifically for presentation to John and Susan Jolley. At that time, the mint charged $1.50 for a single proof silver dollar. Upon receipt, the inscription was added. An interesting footnote to the word "Bland," which was the (then) generally accepted term for this design silver dollar (referring to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878), until well after the turn of the century. The term "Morgan Dollar" was never used at that time. This is a truly unique prize for either the silver dollar specialist and/or a Love Token enthusiast.
