1878 7TF S$1 Reverse of 1879 MS66 PCGS. Ex: Jackson Hole. This is a transitional piece created from the new reverse hub that became standard in 1879. The eagle has a rounded breast and the top arrow feather is slanted, among other slight changes. Mint documentation indicates that these new-hub coins were first used in June 1878. Dave Bowers specified the changeover date as June 28, and estimated a mintage of 7.8 million coins with the 1878 reverse and 1.5 million coins with the 1879 reverse, although the actual number coined may be as high as 2 million pieces. More important than the original mintage is the survival today. This example is tied for the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS. An attractively mirrored example, this representative has lustrous devices with brilliant silver surfaces enhanced by a faint trace of pale gold color. Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
