1878 7TF<S$1> Reverse of 1878 PR67 PCGS. The 1878 7 tail feathers issue was struck in two major reverse variations. The first, of which this coin is a representative, is the Second Reverse, with 7 tail feathers, parallel top arrow feather, and concave breast on the eagle. This is often called the Reverse of 1878. The other 7 tail feathers issue is the Third Reverse, with slanting top arrow feather and convex breast to the eagle. This is the Reverse of 1879. David Bowers (1993) estimates that the proof mintage of the Reverse of 1878 variety was between 250 to 300 pieces. He suggests that about 150 specimens survive today, mostly in the PR60 to PR64 range.
The Superb Gem offered in the present lot displays a magnificent range of toning. Iridescent electric-blue bathes the upper and right (facing) obverse border and most of Liberty's cap and hair, and the lower and right (facing) reverse border and the upper part of the left (right facing) wing. This coloration transitions to lavender and burnt-orange in the centers, leaving Liberty's cheek and neck and the lower part of the eagle essentially untoned. The design elements are sharply impressed, with no areas exhibiting weakness. They are also lightly frosted, and stand out against the mirrored fields. This outstanding specimen, which is the finest known certified by either grading service (11/05), is sure to draw the attention of the Morgan dollar enthusiast.
From The JFS Collection, Part Three.
