This strongly doubled version of the "7 over 8" tailfeathers issue shows tips of five complete feathers between and below the final display. Coins of this major type should more properly be called Doubled Tail Feathers, as different examples from various reverse dies show varying numbers of additional feathers. Dave Bowers discussed this issue in the Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars: "This was called the 7 Over 8 Tail Feathers, a good description of the die making process, but not reflective of the number of tail feathers that can be seen. Today, 'Doubled Tail Feathers' is preferred."
This is a fully brilliant example with deeply mirrored fields and lustrous silver devices, provided excellent cameo contrast. Examples of this issue are sometimes encountered with prooflike fields on one side or the other, but rarely with both sides exhibiting mirrored fields, and almost never with deeply mirrored fields on both sides as seen here. In fact, this example is one of just two to receive a Gem MS65 DMPL grade by PCGS, with none finer. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (1/05).
From The Dr. Volker Dube Collection. Lot:7207
