Scarce “Seven/Eight-Tailfeather” 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar BU The original 1878 Morgan dollar displayed eight tailfeathers on the eagle. After objections that eagles have a center tailfeather, designer GeorgeT. Morgan prepared master dies with seven tailfeathers. But some remaining “8-Tailfeather” dies were overpunched with the new “7-Tailfeather” hub and the new image did not totally cover the previous one. The result was the “7-over-8”variety, even scarcer than the first type in the Brilliant Uncirculated quality we offer. Revised “Seven-Tailfeather” 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar UNC After the original eight-tailfeather eagle Morgandollar type embarrassed the Mint Director, he ordered a new type with seven tailfeathers later in 1878.
