1878<$5> Five Dollar, Judd-1574, Pollock-1766, R.6, PR67 Brown PCGS. Ex: Bass Collection. William Barber's design that shows the head of Liberty wearing a band inscribed LIBERTY incused with E PLURIBUS UNUM around the margin. This portrait is similar in design to the famous $4 Flowing Hair Stella pattern. The reverse has an erect eagle with raised wings. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The beautifully preserved surfaces are virtually free from carbon and offer glassy reflectivity with a deep outline of cherry-red around the devices. Splendid blue iridescent highlights burst forth when the specimen is tilted beneath a light. A magnificent Barber pattern and quite rare as such.
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers, 5/99), lot 1373, where it realized $9,775.
From The Watson Collection.
