<B>1878 $3 MS65 PCGS.</B></I> The definitive type coin for the three dollar gold denomination, the 1878 has a much larger certified population in Mint State than either of its nearest competitors. Garrett and Guth (2006) even go so far as to state that "Uncirculated specimens are very common, even through MS65." A look at the NGC <I>Census Report</B></I> and PCGS <I>Population Report</B></I>, however, shows that while there is an appreciable population of Gem coins, such pieces actually rate as R.3, or scarce, on the Modified Sheldon Rarity Scale. Semantics aside, this gorgeous Gem has exemplary, swirling luster and delightful wheat-gold color with hints of straw.
