1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. In anticipation of gold being excha
1878 $3 MS65 PCGS. In anticipation of gold being exchangeable at par with paper money on January 1, 1879, as mandated by the Specie Redemption Act of 1875, the Mint produced considerable numbers of gold coins, including 82,304 business strikes of the 1878 three dollar gold. The market achieved parity on its own in late December--but when the public realized they could exchange paper money for gold whenever they wanted, a giant collective yawn was the result. Most of the freshly minted three dollar gold pieces went into long-term bag storage. Contact marks are generally a problem for this issue. Not so with this delightful example, however. Brilliant cartwheel luster radiates from the yellow-gold surfaces, accented by glints of orange-gold at the rims. There are no singular abrasions, and the eye appeal is quite high. This beautiful candidate for a Gem gold type set is certified in a green-label PCGS holder.
From The James Paul Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
