1878<$3> MS65 PCGS. In 1875, the U.S. government announced that on January 1, 1879, paper currency would be exchanged on a par with gold coins, for the first time since 1861. The Mint accordingly began stockpiling a supply of gold coins, in anticipation of the increased demand. But when the day arrived, members of the public yawned as they realized they could exchange their paper money at any time ... and they were used to it, and didn't want to change. As a result, most 1878 three dollar coins ended up being stored in Mint State condition in bank vaults. This is easily the most plentiful three dollar gold issue, one that enjoys unceasing demand from type collectors at all levels of preservation. This is a lovely Gem whose originally preserved surfaces are awash in golden-rose and reddish-orange colors. The luster is full with a richly frosted texture, and both sides are essentially pristine and lacking any mentionable abrasions. A swirl of slightly deeper color is evident on the obverse at the I in AMERICA, and there is another near the upper right reverse wreath. The sharp strike is free of criticism.
From The Chief Paduke Collection.
