1878<$3> MS64 PCGS. This issue has the second highest mintage of any three-dollar gold piece behind the 1854. In the later years of the decade, the Mint prepared for the beginning of 1879, when gold coins could be received in exchange for paper currency with no premium. For this reason, mintages of all gold coins were increased in 1878, to anticipate a substantial need. Despite anticipated needs, there was no rush to exchange paper for gold, and these coins merely sat in bank vaults. As a result, nearly all survivors from the original mintage of 82,000 coins are in high grades, with more Mint State pieces than circulated pieces known today. This example is a lovely orange-gold piece with fully brilliant satin luster and exceptional eye appeal.
