1878 $3 MS64 PCGS. Mint records show that the coiner delivered 1878 three dollar business strikes on May 29, 1878 (9,000 coins), June 13 (13,100 pieces), June 5 (14,000), June 17 (9,830), and November 7 (36,374 coins). Many were paid out, but thousands remained at the mint and were later melted (Henry Chapman note in the R. B. Leeds catalog, November 1906, lot 49, stating that many of 1878, 1879, and 1880 had been melted at the Mint). Both sides of the MS64 example for sale in this lot are awash in peach-gold and lime-green luster, and a well directed strike results in nice definition in the design features, save for the usual weakness on the bowknot.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
