1878 $3 MS64 PCGS. According to David Bowers and Doug
1878<$3> MS64 PCGS. According to David Bowers and Doug Winters in The United States Three Dollar Gold Pieces, the 1878 three dollar, with a business strike mintage of 82,304 pieces, "... stands as the most plentiful of all dates, by far, in Mint State, giving it 'common' status." Along this line, the authors cite an interview that Bowers had with John J. Ford, Jr., in which the latter related: "... There was a large group of gem 1878 $3 pieces, maybe a thousand or more. I bought about 400 of them, first paying $25 each, then $30. I sold at least 300 of them to Aubrey Bebee ... for $50 each."
This near-Gem specimen features radiant luster and pretty apricot-gold patina with some accents of faded red. The design elements exhibit sharply struck impressions. Minute marks on the cheek and neck and in the obverse fields limit the grade. What appear to be a couple of strands of hair have been trapped in the holder over the lower right obverse.
