1878 $3 MS63 PCGS. The 82,304-piece business strike mintage was the highest since the denomination was began in 1854. David Bowers (2005) explains this production spike in terms of the government mandate that, as of January 1, 1879, gold coins would be exchangeable at par with paper money. In anticipation of this, it was though prudent to " ... build up a stock of such pieces, including smaller denominations for public convenience." Swirling luster embraces both sides of this peach-gold Select specimen. Sharply struck, save for the usual softness on the bowknot. A few minute marks keep from the next highest grade.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
