1878 $3 MS63 PCGS. A lustrous apricot-gold type coin w 1878[$3] MS63 PCGS.
1878<$3> MS63 PCGS. A lustrous apricot-gold type coin with only a hint of striking incompleteness on Liberty's eyebrow and other highpoints. Three dollar pieces in quality Mint State are subject to voracious demand from gold type collectors and speculators. The 1878 is the most available date of the series in Uncirculated grades, although the higher mintage 1854 is more common in worn condition. The reverse design was modified after 1854, to increase the size of DOLLARS. The obverse hub was never changed, however, despite poor spacing of the legends. The IB and ER in LIBERTY, for example, are much too wide. On the present piece, light recutting is present within the upper loops of the 8s in the date, and minor die doubling is noted on portions of DOLLARS and the upper wreath. Encapsulated in an old green label holder.
