1878<$3> MS61 NGC. This attractive gold type coin has reasonable luster and refreshingly unabraded fields. A tiny russet toning fleck is noted on the reverse at 10 o'clock. Housed in a prior generation NGC holder. Federal paper money finally achieved parity with gold in 1878, and the Treasury believed that gold coins would return to Eastern circulation. Production increased for most gold denominations, but paper money continued to be preferred over the quarter eagle and three dollar gold piece, and their mintages were greatly reduced in 1879.
