1878 $3 Gold
1878 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice orange toning with reflective fields. 82,304 minted. Heart-stopping beauty. Each side has beams of yellow-gold to peach-colored toning that encompass everything with frosty luster. Mostly well struck on the legends and main device, this is just a touch of weakness at the ostrich plumes of the stylized headdress and on the wreath bow on the reverse. For the plumage, Longacre (who created the design for the $3 as well as the Type 2 and 3 Gold Dollars), had to cram everything into the limited space available. When, years later, other artists created Indian head designs for the $2.50, $5, and $10 gold, they chose to flatten the feathers toward the back of the head to better utilize the space, or, in the case of Saint-Gaudens' $10 Indian, he had sufficient room to put them in a grand display like a peacock's. Longacre's $3 is a favorite with gold coin buyers for the unusual denomination (PCGS # 8000) .
Estimated Value $3,900 - 4,000.
