1878 25C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 4-D. If this sharply struck coin is indicative of the issue, we cannot understand why Briggs (1991) states that the proof 1878 Quarter was "very sloppily made." This coin is not indicative of the issue in that the surfaces are exceptionally smooth with nary a distracting hairline to report. Rich antique-copper toning overlays the obverse, through which electric-blue undertones shine at most angles. There is some lighter, more mottled patina on the reverse with dominant lilac-gray hues. Fully struck with diagnostic rust lumps (as struck) throughout the reverse shield and a tiny obverse tick on Liberty's cheek. This coin shares the PR67 grade level with only two other coins at NGC and PCGS, and there is not a single example finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
