1878 20C PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. The bill that would eventually end the short life of the unpopular Twenty Cent piece was first introduced in Congress in July of 1876. It became law on May 2, 1878. By the latter date, the Philadelphia Mint had only sold approximately 600 of the 760 proofs prepared in 1878. Those that had not yet sold were melted (along with any other Twenty Cent pieces remaining in the Mint) by order of Director Henry R. Linderman. Today, the proof-only 1878 is highly sought by final-year type collectors and Twenty Cent specialists alike, particularly at the finer grade levels. Not only is the present example smooth and virtually pristine, but the surfaces are richly and originally toned in colors that enhance the already impressive eye appeal. Splashes of cobalt-blue color interrupt the otherwise copper-charcoal appearance of the obverse. The reverse is a little more vivid with orange-gold and blue colors deepening in shade at indirect angles. Razor sharp in striking detail with eye appeal to spare. Population: 16 in 66, there is just one finer. From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
