<B>1878 20C PR65 Cameo NGC.</B></I> While the 2008 <I>Guide Book</B></I> reports the 1878 twenty cent proof-only mintage being 600 pieces, Walter Breen, in his <I>Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins</B></I>, speculates that: "... about 500 1878's might have been issued--possibly a few less." Regardless of the mintage, certified population figures would indicate that relatively few coins survived with full Cameos. <BR> This Gem Cameo displays pronounced field-motif contrast, and is exquisitely struck throughout. Sprinkles of golden-tan patination concentrate at the obverse borders, while the reverse takes on splotches of medium intensity cobalt-blue, lavender, and golden-brown color in the upper and right fields. A few wispy marks in the fields appear under magnification, but are not at all distracting.
