1878 $10 MS64 PCGS.<p>Ex: Bass. Production of Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint increased from 817 pieces in 1877 to 73,800 coins in 1878. Survivors of the latter issue are obtainable enough in circulated grades, but high grade Mint State representatives are few and far between. The present example from the Bass Collection is overlaid in rippling mint frost with a strike that is sharp in all areas save for the central obverse. The obverse is tinged in golden-rose color, the reverse exhibits a brighter, orange-gold appearance. As befits the assigned grade, neither side is excessively abraded, and a pair of obverse toning spots before Liberty's forehead and on the rim outside star 2 are noted as pedigree markers. Both major grading services have seen just seven coins in MS64, with a lone PCGS MS65 specimen finer (10/01).From the Peter Martinez Collection.
