<B>1878 $10 MS64 NGC.</B></I> After the rarities of the 1860s and mid-1870s, mintages of Liberty Head eagles jumped exponentially in the years through 1882. While the 1878 mintage was a modest 73,780 coins--highest since 1861--by 1881 the production total jumped to more than 3.8 million pieces. The 1878 is nonetheless somewhat scarce, although Mint State examples can be located with patience. This is a beautiful near-Gem piece with deep orange-gold surfaces, exuberant luster, and considerable prooflikeness on the reverse. The bold strike completes the attractive package.
