1878 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1564,
1878 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1564, Pollock-1755, Low R.7, PR61 NGC. A head of Liberty faces left on the obverse with 13 stars arranged seven before and six after. Liberty wears a cap inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with wheat, cotton leaves, and bolls. E PLURIBUS UNUM is at the top and the date 1878 is below. On the reverse, 38 stars encircle the inscription GOLOID / METRIC. / 1 - G. / 16.1 - S. / 1.9 - C. / GRAMS 14.25. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination expressed as 100 CENTS is below. Struck in standard silver alloy (90% silver, 10% copper) with a reeded edge. This design is known in two compositions: standard silver as represented here and goloid alloy (5.26% gold, 84.74% silver, and 10.00% copper). The two compositions have a combined rarity rating of R.6 with Pollock (1994) reporting that attempts to break down the rarity factor have foundered because of the tentative nature of many attributions (Judd-1563 for the goloid pieces and Judd-1564 for those in standard silver) assigned to extant examples.
The coin in this lot is lightly toned, with sharp striking detail throughout. The surfaces are a bit glossy, with scattered hairlines and a few small, non-distracting contact marks. Census: 2 in 61, 3 finer (10/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
