1877-S<T$1> MS64 PCGS. This issue has the highest mintage of any Trade Dollar, approaching 10 million coins, and nearly double the next highest mintage. In fact, the mintage of this issue is fully one-fourth of all Trade Dollars throughout the entire series. Now that we have explained how common these should be, let's discuss how uncommon they really are. Granted, more 1877-S Trade Dollars exist than any other date, and that is as it should be. However, much of the original mintage was exported, and many others were melted in later years, thus pristine examples were not saved by collectors or others at the time of issue. Mintmark chasing was still many years away, thus most collectors really only cared about one example of each date, and most chose Philadelphia Mint Proofs. While there are still a couple thousand or so Mint State examples of this date, Choice and Gem quality coins remain extremely difficult to locate. Take a look at the population. This example has frosty silver luster with ivory color with considerable darker golden toning, tending toward olive-green. It is very sharply struck, and is perhaps as nicely detailed as any business strike in this sale.
From The Daniel D. Biddle Collection, Part One.
