1877-S T$1 AU58 NGC. Breen-5811. The Broken Arrows s
1877-S T$1 AU58 NGC. Breen-5811. The "Broken Arrows" sub-variety. This rare sub-variety was discussed at length in a Gobrecht Journal article a couple of years ago. The author of that article, Joe Kirchgessner, wrote a synopsis of this reverse and its significance:

"The 77-S that you are referring to is a interesting die state. ... it is an interesting die state where the top and bottom shafts are mere remnants of the original shafts. This was in the die (I have an example myself in PCGS-60). This was likely a master die issue and was used on the Type IIM (M = middle) transitional die prior to the conversion over to a Type IIL (L = late) die. The most obvious way to identify a Type M and L die is to look on the wing and you will see a small feather bump on the tail feather right above the olive leaves for a M and no bump on a L die. Compare your coin with a 78-S coin and the difference can be seen. Okay, back to the missing arrows ... the most interesting aspect about the die that was used on this 77-S is that it was used also on the 78-S DDR coin as well. The 78-S DDR die was first hubbed with the 77-S broken arrows die and then over-hubbed with a Type IIL die. If you look very carefully at a 78-S DDR one can see the remnants of the broken arrows die."

This piece is sharply defined throughout with light, even patina over each side and bright underlying surfaces. A number of small handling marks are seen in the fields on both obverse and reverse.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
