1877-S Liberty Seated 50C
1877-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Frosty with stunning rainbow toning on the obverse and warm golden tones on the reverse. Sleek frostiness seesaws in and out of the devices under these lovely colors with an occasional hint of silver sparkling edging its way through. On the heels of such active luster and toning, we are satisfied to describe a coin faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies.

Although forgotten by numismatists now, 1877 was a special year. It had long been thought that the subsidiary coins which suddenly disappeared in 1861-62 during the Civil War were melted or sent to Europe and sold as bullion. As a matter of fact only a small proportion were disposed of in this way. The great majority went to countries where they had values as coins above their bullion values, some to Canada but most to Latin-America. Their dramatic reappearance in America beginning in 1877 fill the press reports of the time. Pop 25; 14 in 66; 1 in 66+; 1 in 67 (PCGS # 6357) .
Estimated Value $3,700 - 3,900.
