1877-S $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. Simply put, this is an issue that does not surface all that often in the finer Mint State grades. This cataloger has to admit that, we he first saw this coin, he incorrectly assumed that it was a common S-mint Liberty Two-and-a-Half. After all, the 2003 Guide Book lists prices for this date that are significantly lower than those of the preceding S-mint deliveries in this series. A glance at current NGC and PCGS population data, however, quickly forced a change in thinking. In MS64, both major grading services have seen only nine 1877-S Quarter Eagles. With just three examples certified finer (10/02), the present near-Gem is a condition rarity that would form the centerpiece of any advanced collection of 19th century gold. Both sides are razor sharp in strike with fully original reddish-gold coloration. With pleasing luster quality and no outwardly distracting abrasions, this coin has the eye appeal of a full Gem grade.
