Three-Cent Nickels 1877 PCGS graded Proof 63. <b>Choice quality surfaces on either side without distracting spots, the fields a light hazy gray. All devices on this key issue are razor-sharp, from the crisp frosted head of Liberty to the Roman III on the reverse with its vertical lines like Roman pillars. The Guide Book of United States Coins gives the 1877's mintage as 510+ and assumes the mint records, which were sometimes inaccurate in the 19th century, are as close as anyone will get to the true number. Since this is a date that was struck only in Proof finish, with no strikes made for circulation, 1877 has achieve the distinction of being the scarcest date in the series. Three-cent coins struck on the mint's 75% copper, 25% nickel planchets were made annually from 1865 until 1889 when the denomination was abolished pursuant to the Coinage Act of 1890.
