The mintage of 1877 Indian cents was at an all time low for the series, not to be repeated at this level until the even lower mintage 1909 San Francisco Mint Indian cent. It is true that the low mintage for '77 is due in part to a slowdown in the economy, which forced large quantities of older cents back into circulation. This caused the Mint to produce less new cents. The hallmark of a cherry original Proof is exactly what you see here: bold strike on all devices, lovely luminous copper-gold surfaces with a nice light mixture of brown, and spot-free surfaces.
