1877 Indian Head Cent PCGS MS65RB
Small Cents 1877 PCGS graded Mint State 65. Red and Brown. King of the Indian Cents, the most difficult year to locate in just about any grade, and highly prized in Mint condition. We are pleased to offer with this lot a golden brown to mint-luster red-gold specimen that has about 30% red coverage. Some of the feathers lack details and there is also minor rounding on the bust end, the bead necklace Liberty wears, and design is lacking in the hair as it passes over the shoulder point. The shield's horizontal lines are also a little weak, but this isn't really noticeable on first glance. Coinage of cents from 1871 to 1877 was maintained, according to Snow's reference book on the series, by the recoinage of the old pre-1857 large cents, bronze cents, and discontinued two-cent pieces. This supply was now exhausted, the lack of available copper being the reason for the drop-off in mintage in 1877. (The Mint was forced to look elsewhere for a reliable supply of planchets.) "The reverse hub used for most of this issue is the old Type 1 hub which was retired in 1870" according to Snow.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
