1877-CC T$1 MS62 NGC. The first 1877-CC Trade Dollars were not produced until June of that year (the Carson City Mint had not struck any coins of this type since April 1876), and by year's end just 534,000 examples had been delivered. It appears that not all of these coins were distributed. Some coins, perhaps as high as 10,000 pieces, may have were retained at the Carson City Mint and melted on July 19, 1878 along with numerous examples of the 1878-CC delivery. The vast majority of those '77-CC examples that escaped the melting pot met a fate of heavy circulation, defacement, or melting in the Far East. As a result, this issue is one of the scarcest Trade Dollars in Mint State, with most of the survivors concentrated in the BU grades. This is an attractively original example with warm orange-gold toning over suitably lustrous surfaces. The color livens toward the denticles, particularly on the reverse. Virtually all features are sharply struck, and the scattered distractions include a few moderate bagmarks in the obverse field and a couple of wispy abrasions after the wheat shafts.
