1877-CC<50C> MS65 PCGS. WB-103. Tail Hub Variety 2, Normal Date. This is one of three plentiful Carson City Mint half dollars, although none of these are common in Gem condition. Just the same, this date along with 1875-CC and 1876-CC are the dates of choice for type collectors who desire coins from the Carson City facility. The WB-103 die combination is the only common variety for this particular date. In a 1978 Stack's auction, an offering of two similar coins was stated by the consignor to be from an original roll. This is a sharply struck and highly lustrous example with pleasing and brilliant silver luster on both sides. Frosty texture on the devices is framed by satiny fields. Only a faint graze in the left obverse field is worth mentioning individually. A faint line of apricot toning extends from star 10 to Liberty's throat. Both sides, and especially the reverse, have thin, spindly die cracks around the periphery. Population: 17 in 65, 3 finer (9/05).
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
