1877-CC $20 MS61 NGC.
1877-CC $20 MS61 NGC.<p>In 1877, the design was modified by changing the value from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS. This is especially relevant to Carson City collectors as it presents the only significant design change for gold coinage from this mint. Almost every known Uncirculated example of this date comes from a monumental hoard of United States gold coins that was quietly sold during the mid-1990s. Many of these 1877-CC Double Eagles were offered in the Bowers and Merena July 1995 sale and the single finest example was auctioned earlier in Bowers' May 1993 sale where it fetched $23,100. The Eagle Collection's NGC MS61 is listed in the Winter/Halperin 2001 Condition Census, and appears to be one of the finest of the 18 to 20 Uncirculated examples that are currently known. Strictly Uncirculated, the lustrous surfaces display bright mint frost and the striking details are well defined in all areas of the design. As with many of the hoard coins that came onto the market a few years ago, this piece shows a number of alloy spots (especially on the obverse) and a few small grease stains (as struck). Usually a heavily abraded issue, the only mark of importance is located in the left reverse field below (UNIT)ED. Light reddish-coppery color overall.
