1877-CC $20 MS60 NGC. Winter 1-A. The Type Three Double Eagle made its debut in 1877 with the denomination written as TWENTY DOLLARS. Production at the Carson City Mint fell to 42,565 pieces in 1877 after record highs in 1874, 1875, and 1876. The 1877-CC, of course, is a much more difficult issue to locate than the 1874-CC, 1875-CC, and 1876-CC, and, with 500-600 pieces believed extant (per Winter and Halperin, 2001), it ranks ninth in overall rarity among Double Eagles from this coinage facility. A mere 18-20 survivors reside at the Mint State level, with MS60 representatives qualifying for low end Condition Census status. Sharply struck throughout, this coin displays a bright, satiny finish that highlights the original green-gold and orange-gold colors. Scattered abrasions account for the assigned grade, and they include a reverse scrape above the eagle's head. There is also an obverse planchet flaw (as struck) on Liberty's cheek that appears to have been produced by an over-concentration of copper. A faint grease stain (also as produced) is noted at Liberty's jawline. We do not know the prior pedigree of this coin, but it may have first entered the numismatic market in the mid 1990s as part of small hoard of high grade '77-CC Double Eagles. From the Ashland City Collection.
