<B>1877-CC $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> In his <I>Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint</B></I>, Douglas Winter writes: "The 1877-CC double eagle is usually found in Extremely Fine to lower end About Uncirculated grades. This issue becomes hard to locate in the middle range of About Uncirculated and properly graded About Uncirculated-58 pieces are scarce. This is a very scarce coin in Uncirculated with most of the known pieces grading Mint State-60."<BR> The NGC/PCGS population data tend to bear out Winter's contention, though we see a spike in the population distribution at the AU58 level. This likely results from the multiple submissions of high-end AU coins by dealers and collectors in the hope of garnering a Mint State grade.<BR> The bright brass-gold surfaces of this AU58 example exhibit luster in the recessed areas. All of the design elements are sharp and uniformly struck up, which when combined with surface color and luster add up to pleasing visual appeal. Winter notes that most examples of this issue show "very extensive abrasions," and that these pieces "... are often marred by clusters of deep, detracting marks." This specimen does reveal some bagmarks, but we do not consider these to be "very extensive," "deep," or "detracting."<BR><BR><B>Coin Engraver:</B> James B.
