1877-CC $20 AU58 NGC. This is the first Type III double eagle issue from the Carson City Mint. It had a low mintage of 42,565 pieces, and survivors number approximately 500 to 600, according to Doug Winter (2001). Winter stipulates that somewhere between 357 and 415 of those coins are in VF to XF condition, however, with only around 125 to 175 pieces in AU. Mint State examples are rare. This near-Gem coin displays nearly full satin luster, and pleasing lime-gold and peach coloration. Modest highpoint wear is noted on each side, and the number and severity of abrasions is not excessive for the grade.

Coin Engraver: James B.
