1877-CC<$20> AU55 PCGS. This issue marks the beginning of a new design type with the denomination spelled out, TWENTY DOLLARS. According to Rusty Goe: "Yields from the Comstock mines were the highest in the history of that legendary region, but since a progressively smaller percentage of the gold ore was being deposited at the Carson City Mint, that facility seemingly lost a great opportunity when its gold production suddenly took a sharp drop in 1877. For example, the Carson City Mint only produced 42,565 double eagles, less than one-third the previous years' production. This Choice AU example is a remarkable piece with frosty orange-gold color and wispy pink toning highlights. Although a few scattered surface marks are evident, the overall quality is much better than usually seen. Both sides have strong design details, as usual for the Type Three double eagle coinage. The obverse has a hint of reflectivity, while the reverse is entirely frosty. In a green label PCGS holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
