1877-CC<10C> MS66 PCGS. Type Two Reverse. Fortin-110. The obverse has several fine die scratches in the drapery just to the right of the shield. The reverse die is shattered with a series of interconnected die cracks with and near the wreath. This reverse die would later be used in 1878. While not a rare variety, the shattered reverse die adds to the interest in this die marriage. The coinage of 1877-CC dimes was considerable, amounting to 7.7 million coins. Gerry Fortin has identified 26 different die marriages of both reverse types. The quick identification point for the two major reverse types is the relationship between the upper right corner of E in ONE and the wreath. This letter nearly touches the wreath on the Type One reverse dies and it is distant on the Type Two reverse dies. This example is a top quality representative with sharp design elements and frosty luster beneath ivory and iridescent toning. Population: 21 in 66, 4 finer (4/06).
