1877-CC $10 AU50 PCGS. Winter 1-A. The Condition Census for this low mintage CC-mint rarity ranges in grade from "Mint State-60 or better" to AU50 (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). The final entry on the list in the book Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint reads: "As of March 2001, PCGS had graded two [1877-CC Eagles] in About Uncirculated-50." One of these may be the present coin in the Ashland City Collection, although we are unaware of its prior pedigree. Both sides are awash in rich reddish-gold color with whispers of powder-blue highlights here and there. The latter shade is only readily evident at direct angles, but the devices readily reveal bold definition that wanes a little over the central highpoints from slightly inadequate striking pressure. Neither side is excessively abraded for a '77-CC Eagle at the AU50 level, and a few isolated hints of original luster are seen around the date and the denomination TEN D. A definite highlight of the present sale, this coin is one of only 6-8 examples believed extant in AU from an original delivery of a mere 3,332 pieces. From the Ashland City Collection.
