1877<5C> PR67 Cameo PCGS. The 1877 Shield nickel is a proof-only issue from a mintage variously estimated between 510 and 2,000 coins. The actual mintage is not known, but was probably in the range of 1,000 to 1,500 coins. It was not until 1878 that actual mintage figures for the proof minor coinage were recorded. Older catalogs recorded the mintage as 510 coins, a quantity equal to the mintage of silver coins of the year. It is now known that the minor coinage in proof were produced in larger quantities. This example is a sharply struck Superb Gem Cameo proof with pristine nickel-gray surfaces and excellent contrast. This is one of the brightest and finest examples that we have seen. In fact, it is tied for the finest certified; PCGS has never certified a deep cameo piece. Most examples are dull and lackluster, but not this beauty. It is truly a coin to be appreciated. Population: 4 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (7/06).
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
