1877 5C PR67 Cameo NGC. A proof-only date with a minta
1877 5C PR67 Cameo NGC. A proof-only date with a mintage that was probably in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 1,500 pieces. It was not until 1878 that the Mint actually began recording proof mintages of the minor coinage issues. Over the years, most standard coin catalogs have recorded a mintage of 510 proofs for the minor coinage denominations, borrowing the production figure from the mintage of proof silver coins for the same year. The Mint actually sold minor coin proof sets (consisting of the cent, three-cent, and nickel) in addition to the standard proof sets during these early years, thus the total mintage of the small denomination coins was greater than that of the silver coins. This example of the 1877 Shield nickel is a splendid Cameo proof of superb quality. Both sides are fully brilliant and fully struck with exceptional contrast. Other than some innocent planchet lamination along the obverse border, the surfaces are remarkable without any significant blemishes. Census: 3 in 67, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
