1877 5C PR65 Cameo PCGS. The Mint Act of March 3, 1871, required the Mint to redeem minor coins in any quantity. For a while the older coins turned included old large cents and half cents, copper-nickel Indian cents, two cents, and nickel three cents and five cents. As time passed, redemptions of the older pre-1864 coins slowed, and by 1874 the Mint simply began reissuing the copper-nickel cents and nickel three and five cents without recoining them. Of the 10 million Indian cents issued in 1877, less than 1 million of them were new cents, and in the case of the five cent nickel, there was simply no need, so only 510 proofs were made. That issue and the 1878, also proof-only, are the series keys. This golden-gray piece offers good field-device contrast and good eye appeal, despite a few trivial obverse flecks that appear under magnification. Population: 28 in 65 Cameo, 28 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
