1877 5C PR61 ANACS. Muted luster radiates from the olive-gray and gold surfaces of this proof-only key date in the Shield nickel series, the first of two along with the 1878. Numismatic researcher R.W. Julian has found information in the National Archives that a bit more than 900 proofs were sold, either individually or in proof sets--but by December 1877, all of those pieces had been sold. Judging by the surviving population, another unrecorded proof striking was likely done. There are two proof dies (despite the Breen Proof Encyclopedia), with this piece from the second pair, distinguished by the 8 in the date about three-quarters under the ball (on the first pair the 8 is entirely under the ball). The rim is not fully squared, with a narrow and irregular border--a characteristic of some coins of this issue--and the obverse devices appear to have been hubbed quite deeply into the die. A small contact mark is noted on the reverse, southeast of the central 5 device.
From The Edward Sacks Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
