1877<50C> PR66 PCGS. Breen-5007, and considered by Breen as "Extremely rare." The majority of 1877 halves, including the proofs, use a Type Two reverse (introduced in 1876) that has the lower bud on the olive branch closed. A scant 510 proof halves were struck of the 1877, and surprisingly few are known today in high grade. In fact, only two other PCGS PR66 pieces have been certified and four coins have been so graded by NGC with none finer (3/06). This is a deeply mirrored example whose centers are very lightly toned with deeper russet and blue patination around the margins. The devices are actually moderately frosted also, but this effect is somewhat subdued by the presence of the toning. An outstanding 1877 proof half.
