1877 50C PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Tail Hub Variety II. This hub variety is identifiable by the closed berry on the bottom of the reverse olive branch. Wiley and Bugert (1993) suggest that Charles Barber closed this olive berry in order to distinguish his new hub from the older one, which shows both olive berries open. Most proofs of the 1877 Half Dollar are Tail Hub Variety II, but Breen (1977) asserts that the specimen that appeared as lot 662 in Lester Merkin's sale of March 1968 was Tail Hub Variety I. In an absolute sense, the 1877 is not a rare date, either as a business strike or a proof. That said, we caution bidders that they should expect significant competition for the present specimen due to its status as the finest certified of only eight proof 1877 Halves designated Cameo by NGC (7/02). The centers are untoned--a feature that allows for full appreciation of the excellent field-to-device contrast. With warm orange-russet peripheral iridescence and uncommonly smooth features, this sharp looking example is an original, no-questions Gem.From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
